Is this the right course for me?

This course is for anyone interested in a career in the Hotel and Catering Industry which includes:

Learning how food is prepared and cooked ,how a bar operates, the techniques involved in the service of food, the service and handling of fine wines.

What will I need to join the course?
Although there are no special entry requirements for this course, we do look for a good standard of education to enable you to cope with the necessary theory work and most importantly a genuine desire and enthusiasm to build a firm foundation for a career in the Hotel and Catering Industry.
What will I be doing?

Your study will be mostly practical and will give you experience in a number of subject areas which include:

  • Food Preparation and Production
  • Food & Beverage Service Techniques
  • Allied Theory subjects
  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Basic Food Hygiene

In the past we have been able to give students the opportunity to gain work experience at such prestigious events as the British Open Golf Championship, Buckingham Palace Garden Parties, Paris Air-Show, Farnborough Air-Show, Chelsea Flower Show as well as gaining invaluable experience in the Le Plaisir Restaurant, cooking, serving and supervising Haute Cuisine food and drink.

During the course you will be working within the excellent 'Le Plaisir' restaurant both in the preparation and service of food and drink.

How long might the course last and what patterns of attendance are available?
One year full-time at Lowestoft College.
How will my progress on the course be assessed?
Throughout the year you will be assessed by the completion of a series of competences to achieve success in both food preparation and service. All students will be expected to complete a small test in food hygiene early on in the course.
What can I achieve?

NVQ Level I in Food and Drink Service

Units Towards:
Institution of Environmental Health Officers Basic Food Hygiene Certificate
NVQ Level II Food Preparation & Cooking
NVQ Level II Food and Drink Service

Key Skills
Through your studies you will be given the opportunity to improve and receive certification of your Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology. In many cases you will also be able to achieve further qualifications in Problem Solving, Improve Own Learning and Performance as well as Working with Others. All key skills are nationally recognised qualifications to improve not only your employability skills but also assist your university application by attracting additional UCAS points.
And the future?

Students who have recently completed the course now enjoy working as Chefs, Waiters and Stewards in Hotels, Restaurants, and on Cruise Liners; locally, nationally and on the continent. There are many opportunities in local, national and international establishments all of which recognise these Professional qualifications.
