Introduction

This course of study leads to the issue of a Chief Mate Certificate of Competency. This is the next phase on the route to becoming a fully qualified Master Mariner.

Pre-requisites

In order to be eligible for this course and qualification, you will need a minimum of 18 months sea service as a watchkeeping officer whilst holding a Certificate of Competency not lower than a Class 4 (STCW 95 Officer of the Watch). You will need to produce Discharge Book entries in verification of your sea time, together with Watchkeeping Certificates to support all watchkeeping sea service.

To support your application to the MCA for a Chief Mate Certificate Of Competency you will have to submit the following:
  • The previous (lower) Certificate of Competency.
  • Discharge book and Watchkeeping certificates.
  • HND Certificate - issued by EdExcel.
  • SCOTVEC results - issued by SCOTVEC.
  • MCA Oral examination result entered on Notice of Eligibility by examiner
  • Navigation, Radar & ARPA Simulation Training (Management) Certificate, issued by the College.
  • Medical Care Aboard Ship Certificate.
  • GMDSS Certificate, issued by the examining centre. This must be approved by the MCA.
  • Medical Fitness Certificate (ENG1 or equivalent). The certificate covers the eyesight requirements providing it is within two years of the date of issue.
  • MCA Sight Test Certificate if the ENG1 certificate is more than two years old.
  • Signals certificate.
 
Duration:
This is a full-time, 32 week course, spread over three terms at College. The NARaST(M) course is integrated into the 32 weeks with a separate certificate being issued. The Medical Care Aboard Ship is an additional one-week course, which will be available at periods throughout the year. In addition to the above, a Dynamic Positioning Induction course will be run for Chief Mate students, at reduced price.
