Introduction
This course is a requirement for seafarers wishing to progress at sea as a rating or become an Officer of the Watch (OOW)
Content
The course is very comprehensive and includes:
Construction and functions of the various parts of the human body
Medical stores carried on ships
General principles relating to pharmacology
The principles for dealing witth accidents or other medical emergencies
The application of immediate first aid in the event of accident or illness
The assessment consists of continuous assessment through multiple questionaires during the course and an oral/practical examination on day three.
If successful, candidates will be awarded a certificate which meets the performance criteria laid down for Medical First Aid Aboard Ship in accordance with Regulation V1/4 of the annex of the STCW convention and section A -V1/4 (1-3) of the STCW Code and the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997. These standards are approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
Pre-requisites
Before commencing training, traniees must be at least 16 years of age and receive approved or recognised training in Elementary First Aid within the preceding five years.
Candidates for a certificate valid unfer the terms of the STCW convention must have served at sea in a merchant vessel for at least 6 months. Training and aseesment must not be taken before the sea service conditions for issue of a certificate have been satisfied, except for those following a VQ route to certification when the normal VQ arrangements apply and the final assessment of evidence takes place after completion of the necessary sea service.
You will ned to bring evidence of sea service , date of birth and any other medical courses you may have completed within the last five years.
